Made as a stainless substitute for its carbon counterpart, NCR paper consists of several sheets of paper that have been coated in various substances. Micro-encapsulated dye coats the back part of the first sheet while the lowermost sheet’s top surface is coated with clay. When exposed to the dye, the clay leaves permanent marks. Any sheets in between are covered with a layer of clay on top and dye on the bottom.
Once writing is made on the sheet, the microcapsules will break and spill the dye due to the pressure from the point of the pen. With the capsules being tiny in size, the print that develops is extremely precise. This staining reaction allows for the transfer of ink without the presence of a carbon insert.
